Muses, A Series on antique book pages

This post illustrates the mixed media pieces in Susan Lenz's series "Muses". The series takes its name from the title of the book from which these foundation pages were taken. The book was published in 1655 !!! The title was: TABLEAVX DV TEMPLE DES MVSES, Tirez Dv Cabinet De Fev Mr. Favereav. When purchased by Susan Lenz and her husband Steve Dingman, the book was NOT COMPLETE. It was missing several engravings and had been rebound at least once since its 17th century date of publication. The images were removed, framed, and sold through Susan and Steve's business, The Mouse House, Inc. Susan, however, couldn't bring herself to discard the antique text. To touch them is to finger history. Susan's concept for this series is to convey a sense of time using current, modern expressions in juxtaposition to the antique French words about even older, Classic Greek mythology. She mounted each page on heavy upholstery material, added watercolor and ink, hand stitching, free motion machine embroidery, and collages of clipped vintage letters and other ephemera. There will be a total of 88 pieces. That's all the pages Susan has! The first six were created during August 2011 while at Hot Springs National Park as an artist-in-residence. The remainder were done after returning to Columbia. The six made in Arkansas are framed differently but the majority are matted to 20" x 16". The top mat includes a champagne-colored filet. All pages are "top mounted" ... meaning the entire page is visible including all edges. The six made in Arkansas are framed. Twenty-five of the others are also framed; the others will be shrink-wrapped in their mats. The framed pieces will cost $225. The matted and shrink-wrapped ones will be priced at $150. General Artist Statement: Using a needle and thread for self-expression, I work to create art that reflects my interest in the concept of time. Memory, universal mortality, and personal legacy are central themes. Vintage and recycled materials are combined with meticulous handwork. Stitched text and free motion machine embroidery add visual and emotional layers. Work is often exhibited in an installation format in order to better communicate message through an accessible atmosphere. I am drawn to textiles for their tactile qualities and often make work that is meant to touch and be touched.

Letter of Intent: I am not proposing a potential project but submitting three previously completed pieces. Each was made from recycled materials. My work has included repurposed materials for several years. The three "R"s (reduce, reuse, recycle) are part of my daily lifestyle as well as my creative impulses. Sharing works with this concept is an important part of my artistic message.

I am not, however, opposed to creating new work for Scrapel Hill. I would truly enjoy a public art project similar to "LOOKING FOR A MATE". I conducted this project with the assistance of the Conagree Vista Guild. Underneath the image of the project's prototype is a list of blog links ... including one to the original proposal. I am known to be rather fearless and willing to tackle just about anything ... so ... if there's a way to make this happen ... GREAT!

Below are my three submissions. Each image can be "clicked on" for enlargement. Once enlarged, the image can be saved. The file names are correctly labelled according to the Scrapel Hill guidelines ... but the image can be enlarged much bigger than required.

(Above: Looking for a Mate, art quilt. 2010. 48" x 42". "Mateless" socks donated by the public on recycled packaging felt, thread; hand stitched. This was the prototype for a public art project in Columbia, South Carolina. It was sponsored by the Conagree Vista Guild, a downtown business/neighborhood association. The guild paid for a series of newspaper advertisements inviting the public to bring their "mateless" socks to the annual Vista Lights art crawl where I was demonstrating and starting another art quilt. This prototype was on display during the public collection and stitching. The art quilt made from the socks collected that evening were stitched into another, larger art quilt which became the Guild's property. The Guild donated it to City Hall where it now hangs in the lobby.

This is just another blog post buried here in the "Strata" of my artistic life on the Internet. I will be linking the photo to a Constant Contact message. The dress is one of the Florestine Collection garments ... handmade clothing rescued by film maker Helen Hill and the subject of her final film. The aprons are ones I've collected at estate sales and auctions. I'm donating them in the sewing tent at Crafty Feast 2011 where I'm volunteering to help visitors learn to alter/embellish/stitch on garments.

Mathias' China

This blog post is for Mathias. His china is the lovely Czech porcelain (above) with the colorful hand painted, floral pattern. My mother gave it to him several years ago. It had been her Great Aunt Lil's. (I think?) It is supposedly a place setting for twelve with all sorts of serving pieces....though it hasn't been counted recently. It is all wrapped in paper....inside two big boxes....in our attic.

My mother, however, has now generously offered her set of Heinrich Anmut Bavarian china made by H &C Selb Co. (Below) This is a place setting for eight....and only one cup is cracked....otherwise, it is perfect. It was a wedding gift to my mom and dad from my Grandpa Mathias Lenz and my Grandma Margaret Heizer Lenz. My mom thought that "Heinrich" was the name of the pattern. It isn't. I think the name of the pattern in "Serenade". So.....the choice is yours, Mathias! Let us know so we can make arrangements for either (or possibly both!) sets to get to England!

Looking for a Mate! An public art quilt project!

LOOKING FOR A MATE

"Looking For a Mate” is a community based art project aimed to educate the public about art quilts* by providing an opportunity to participate in the construction of a concept-driven fiber work. The project also includes a strong emphasis on using post-consumer products and incorporates a happy sense of humor.

Using donated “mate less” socks on recycled acrylic felt, the art quilt will take form. The recycled felt is a packaging material used by several canoe and kayak distributors who ship their vessels to retail shops like Guy Jones’ River Runner, 905 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC.

The project will take place at this location during the annual Vista Lights celebration, Thursday, November 18, 2010.

The public will be invited to bring their “mate less” socks to the annual event through advertisements in the local FreeTimes weekly publication. Straight pins and safety pins will assist members of the public in attaching their socks to the acrylic felt substrata. Fiber artist Susan Lenz and her new studio assistant Sarah Martin will be on hand to assist and to demonstrate appliqué and quilting stitches. The public will be encouraged to stitch on the work as well. Susan Lenz has agreed to create a proto-type art quilt and have it on-hand during Vista Lights to serve as a finished example. She will also complete the public assisted quilt and have it on display at River Runner during the annual spring celebration, Artista Vista in 2011.

The completed art quilt will become the property of the Congaree Vista Guild in appreciation of the funding grant.

*art quilt…must be predominantly fabric or fabric-like material and must be composed of at least two full and distinct layers - a face layer and a backing layer. The face and backing layers must be held together by hand- or machine-made functional quilting stitches or other elements that pierce all layers and are distributed throughout the surface of the work.

WORKING BUDGET

The only funds necessary for a successful project are the costs of advertisement in the Free-Times. Ginny Kuhn, Retail Account Executive at the weekly publication, has extended the lowest rate possible, “event rates”. She suggested quarter page advertisements in both the November 3, 2010 and November 10, 2010 issues. The Free-Times staff can create these advertisements at no additional cost. She further suggested that the Vista Guild include the “mate less sock” request in its annual Vista Lights layout in the November 17^th issue, thus eliminating the need for another, separate ad for this project. In conversation with Deirdre Mardon of the Vista Guild and members of Riley Communication, this plan was deemed quite intelligent and feasible. The cost of each quarter page ad is $245 making the total $490.00. Deirdre Mardon presented this proposal to the Vista Guild Board, and they adopted the project!

SOCK DONATIONS

Anyone can donate “mate less” socks to the upcoming project by dropping them by Susan’s live/work location, just a single block off the Vista, at 2123 Park Street in historic Elmwood Park, Mon. – Fri., between the hours of 9:30 – 5:00 and on some Saturdays from 10 – 2 (or 24/7 in the mailbox!) An alternate drop-off location is at Susan’s studio at Gallery 80808/Vista Studios, 808 Lady Street in the Vista!

Nick Cave at the Halsey Institute

Chicago artist Nick Cave creates costume/sculptures that he calls Soundsuits consisting of brightly colored fabrics, elaborate embroidery, beadwork, raffia and natural materials. Phyllis Galembo's photographic portraits feature masqueraders from the West African countries of Benin, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. Call and Response: Africa to America / The Art of Nick Cave and Phyllis Galembo pairs the work of these two uniquely American artists, each of whom explores the contours of West African masquerade through their art. This exhibition highlights the role of ritual traditions within the formation of cultural identity. While Galembo's intriguing photographs document actual masquerade performers in elaborate "costume," Nick Cave's Soundsuits offer a poetic response incorporating a cornucopia of natural and cultural elements rich in associative possibilities.

Yes....I know this post seems crazy on this blog. The Strata Series blog just isn't going anywhere....so I've started using it as a place to "bury" images and information that I don't exactly want on my regular blog. My regular blog just doesn't need all this "extra stuff". Since "Strata" implies layer of the earth, "burying" a post here seems fitting.

So....Steve and I decided at the last minute to go to Washington, DC for an antiquarian book auction last Thursday night. Friday was spent separately (for the most part). Steve went on a 30-mile bike ride to Mt. Vernon. I do not under any circumstances do things all that. Sensibly, I went into the city and visited the Textile Museum, the Renwick, and the Sackler and Freer Galleries before picking Steve up in Alexandria outside the incredible Torpedo Factory.

I saw the Amish quilt collection at the Textile but photos weren't allowed. Ann Duncan's (President Obama's mother) batik collection was also on display. Photos were allowed. It was very interesting, very personal, and included some excellent signage.

At the Renwick I saw a great exhibit of work by five or six exceptional fine craft artists working with the notion of "disguise and staging to lend significance". "Theatrical devices added drama and meaning". I like these phrases....I liked the entire show....but I also enjoyed seeing Renie Breskin Adams' Point of View. I remember seeing it about six or seven years ago. It recently rotated back onto display.

I was blown away by Beth Lipman's Bancketje (Banquet). More than 400 glass components were created by a team of sixteen. It was mind blowing to see all these glass pieces.

The sign said that such a display "heightened awareness of craft, ritual, and decoration" but it also seemed to me that it both captivated and repulsed. It was all so beautiful, so ornate, so MUCH.....which triggered feeling of waste, indulgence, and ostentatiousness. I really like that "moth to a flame" response....and this banquet certain created this feeling.

Every time I visit the Renwick, I enjoy Larry Fuentes' The Game Fish....but I also look for something totally new to enjoy....something I haven't seen yet.....like Jocelyn Chateauvert's Scratch (2007).

Jocelyn is from South Carolina. Though I've never met her, I certainly know the name and was happy to see a fellow South Carolinian represented in fibers here in the Renwick. The description label read: Abaca, copper, walnut dye, pigment and thread. It was made in 2007 and purchased by the museum only last year. I liked the hanging idea too.

The "In Box" and "Faux-Stained Glass" series is created from polyester stretch velvet, heat activated adhesives, chiffon scarves, and a substrata of recycled, acrylic felt. They are free motion machine embroidered using 100% black, cotton thread. The final steps in this unique process involves applying a soldering iron and also melting the fabric from the reverse. An on-line, free, step-by-step tutorial for this technique can be found HERE.

Knight Riders, Decision Portrait Series

The Decision Portrait Series is about decisions....all sorts of decisions. It is NOT about establishing value judgment. Each piece is meant as a straight forward presentation of a decision made by the person(s) depicted. I was going to stitch the words: KKK Members but this is obvious.

Some of the pieces in this series subtly ask viewers, "What would I do it this situation?" Others remind people about a family member or friend facing a difficult choice. Many bring awareness to religious, moral, social, and health related topics; but, nonetheless, the focus is on the decision...someone's personal option. "Right" and "wrong" aren't was is important.....this is just a look at a DECISION. This portrait is no except.

Knight Riders challenges viewers to THINK about their reactions. It asks, "How would I respond if I knew someone in the KKK?" Who knows? Maybe you do.....and don't even know it. In truth, there are all sorts of controversial organizations....pro-life, pro-choice, many animal rights groups, most political and religious affiliations, various environmental groups, etc. Do you belong to one of these? What do those on the "opposing side" think of you? How would you like them to react to your membership decision?

These two men belong to the Ku Klux Klan and were part of a march in Georgia. I read about it on the Internet. The townspeople weren't particularly happy about it but they respected the group's right to have such a parade. They had to THINK about their reactions to a decision they wouldn't have made themselves. My portrait is meant to challenge viewers with the same question.....How would you react?

I'm burying these epitaphs on this blog. It's Saturday, June 13, 2009...even though the date on this post isn't Saturday, June 13, 2009! These words don't really belong here....but it's my blog and....well...why not! Over the coming months I'll be referring to this 31 page document. I've got it all printed....even though I'm still adding to it. From this list I'll be creating my hanging installation of epitaphs....each free motion machine embroidered onto three shades of the sheerest chiffon I could find. The "tests" for this installation were documented here.
